Why remote assistance pays for itself

Three everyday facts of a service team, which are exactly the three things the calculator turns into hours, euros and CO₂.

Trips you no longer make

Every visit replaced by a video call takes transport, hotel and per diem out of the invoice, and the kilometers out of your footprint. Wideum customers replace between 25 % and 40 % of their on-site trips with remote assistance.

Incidents closed the same morning

A trip ties a technician up door to door for whole days. The same fault, seen live through a phone or a pair of smart glasses, is a session of about 45 minutes — the figure the calculator uses to price the hours you get back.

Your best experts on every job

Senior specialists are scarce, and traveling is what keeps them away from the work only they can do. From the office one expert can join any site, and the man-hours you free up become extra capacity without hiring.

How we calculate it

No black box: these are the five numbers you type in and every assumption behind the result.

What you type in. The ROI tab asks for five numbers about your service team today: how many support technicians you have, how many on-site trips each one makes per year, the average cost of one trip (transport, hotel and per diem), the gross annual salary of a technician, and how many days a technician is tied up per trip, travel plus intervention, door to door. The CO₂ tab asks for the same trips seen from the road: kilometers by plane and by car per trip, hotel nights per trip, trips per year and how many technicians travel. Rough averages are enough — the point is the order of magnitude, and you can move every slider to see how sensitive the result is.

What we assume. The two tabs share one hypothesis: 25 % of the on-site trips are replaced with remote assistance, so three out of four trips still happen. A remote session is priced at 45 minutes (0.75 h) instead of a full day away. The license is 450 € per technician and year. The cost of an hour of technician comes from the gross annual salary × 1.35 (employer cost), spread over 250 working days and 2,000 productive hours a year, with a working day of 8 hours. For the emissions we use 0.101 kg CO₂ per kilometer by plane, 0.108 kg per kilometer by car and 40 kg per hotel night, and we express the result in trees at 22 kg of CO₂ absorbed per mature tree and year.

The formulas are the ones of the two calculators this page replaces, unchanged: the same 25 % and the same emission factors, now with the numbers on screen instead of hidden in the code. Every assumption is a field an editor can change, so if your license price or your working calendar is different, the page can say so.

Only the emissions, with every factor on screen: the CO₂ calculator. Where the numbers come from, and what companies do with them: our white paper on monetising after-sales services and the customer stories and analysis in News.

Frequently asked questions

Service, maintenance and after-sales teams that send technicians to customer sites, and internal maintenance teams that move people between plants. If your technicians travel to fix, inspect or commission things, there is something here to measure. It is an estimate for a business case, not a quotation.

Three things: the travel you no longer pay for (transport, hotel and per diem), the cost of the man-hours a trip blocks, and the Remote Eye license, which is subtracted, not hidden. It does not include spare parts, the downtime of the machine, penalties for late service or the extra revenue a faster service brings — all of which usually make the real case better than this page.

From the kilometers and the nights you enter: 0.101 kg of CO₂ per kilometer by plane, 0.108 kg per kilometer by car and 40 kg per hotel night, multiplied by the trips per year and the technicians who travel. The avoided emissions are the 25 % of trips replaced with a remote session, and the «trees» figure divides that by 22 kg of CO₂ absorbed by one mature tree in a year.

Five numbers for the ROI tab: technicians, trips per technician and year, average cost of a trip, gross annual salary and days blocked per trip. Five more for the CO₂ tab: kilometers by plane, kilometers by car, hotel nights, trips per year and traveling technicians. Every field starts with a sensible default, so you can begin by changing only the ones you know.
